Before the coping saw, there was the turning saw. A common sight in period cabinet shops, the turning saw allowed the craftsperson cut smooth curves in any direction in a variety of woods. Even though this is an old design, I think you’ll find it EXCEEDES the modern coping saw in every way. The turning saw has a longer blade, more mass, a deeper throat, and can even put more tension on the blade. In addition to all that, the traditional design is held together by tension and can be instantly broken down for travel or storage. You can make every part of the tool except the blades (available here) from common hardware and scrap-wood. Plans include a printable temple to make the complex arm shape a breeze.
