These plans show our reconstruction of the workbench from the 1812 edition of Peter Nicholson’s Mechanic’s Companion. We used the text and engraving from that volume to recreate a typical 19th-Century English workbench. While we’ve done our best to be historically accurate, you don’t have to be. The traditional English workbench is a flexible design that can be adapted to fit a variety of workers and spaces. Feel free to copy these plans exactly or use them as a starting point for a bench that fits your needs. Have fun!
